Final concept sketch for Imbroglio’s PC, Ganieda. I ended up settling on this hairstyle after sketching up quite a few options. Hair is (tentatively) bluish-gray, eyes are green - both more or less the same as her brother’s.

I swear, I will never stop loving this series.

The color page is of Oikawa and Iwaizumi, circa junior high.

Oikawa character development, omg. There’s a recollection of when he was in the Intermiddle competitions in junior high, and how there was an ever-present wall that he couldn’t overcome. That wall was Shiratorizawa’s Ushijima Wakatoshi. So Oikawa spent his entire time in junior high trying to become better/faster/stronger in order to beat Ushijima.

And then, when Oikawa was a 3rd year, Kageyama joined the volleyball club. Kageyama was clearly a prodigy, so Oikawa started overworking himself in an attempt to keep pace. The result? In a practice match, he had a ton of combination misses and was switched out for Kageyama. After the game, Oikawa stayed behind in the gym and feverishly practiced his serves. Iwaizumi walked in right as Kageyama asked Oikawa to teach him how to serve and was fast enough to jump in and prevent a really stressed out Oikawa from smacking Kageyama. Iwaizumi tells Kageyama that practice is over for the day and after Kageyama leaves, Oikawa practically explodes. And then there’s this beautifully amazing scene:

Iwaizumi: That substitution today was to let you clear your head. Just take some time and—
Oikawa: There isn’t any time for that when the way I am now, I can’t possibly win against Shiratorizawa!! I want to win and go on to the nationals! In order to win, I have to—
Iwaizumi: All of that “I, I” crap is annoying!!!
(and he headbutts Oikawa hard enough to make his nose bleed. XD)
Iwaizumi: Do you intend to fight by yourself? This isn’t some joke, you dumbass! Your results and the team’s results are the same! If you’re gonna get all conceited, I’ll sock you one!
Oikawa: YOU ALREADY DID!!
Iwaizumi: We’ve got nobody who could win against Ushiwaka 1-on-1!! But volleyball’s got 6 people on the court for a reason!! Whether the opponent’s a genius 1st year or Ushiwaka, “6 people” make the strong even stronger, dumbass!!!

Later, in their final competition of junior high, they won the 1st set against Shiratorizawa, but lost the next two and the game. When they’re all lined up, Oikawa and Iwaizumi are in tears.

Oikawa: When we’re high schoolers, we’ll definitely knock Shiratorizawa down a peg…!!!
Iwaizumi: Absolutely.

Back to the present day. It’s Oikawa’s serve and everyone’s tense. Iwaizumi reminds him that the 2nd opponent Oikawa wants to knock down a peg (Kageyama) is right in front of him. Oikawa then hits an insanely strong serve… and Nishinoya gets it like the awesome libero he is. The ball goes back to Aobajousai’s side, and Kageyama frantically tries to figure out who they’ll use to attack. At first, he thinks they’ll do what he would, but then he realizes that when Oikawa’s driven into a corner, he’ll always use Iwaizumi. Kageyama tugs on Tsukishima’s jersey so they both jump to block the spike and KARASUNO WINS THE SET.

Iwaizumi’s pissed that he was blocked, but Oikawa is more angered by the fact that Kageyama was able to read his intentions. He makes this really scary face as he notes that Kageyama must have learned something from Suga. “To think that a mere dictatorial king would try to become a righteous ruler. What is this? I’m really ragged and annoyed, and yet, this feeling…! Hurry up! Let’s do it! The final set!!!”

Shounen Jump is on break for Golden Week this week (technically next week, but with early scans and whatnot, well…), which means no new chapters until next week at the earliest (issue #24 comes out May 13th).

For reference’s sake, the most recent chapters of my two weeklies (both of which have already been translated and posted on MH) are 41 for Assassination Classroom and 59 for Haikyuu.

Pfft. It looks like Asou-sensei (Saiki Kusuo no Sainan mangaka) has a Korosensei plushie and posted...

Gasp! What’s this? Progress??

Remember how I mentioned a while ago that I was making an otome game based around the Arthurian legends? Well, here’s a test screen from the prologue. The game is nowhere NEAR done, but I’ll probably be posting up test screens/character art/whatnot every now and then (maybe I’ll give the game its own blog thing when I’m further along).

I’ve only skimmed the chapter, but here are some things that amused me/stood out.

Hinata and Kageyama are watching from the sidelines, and Hinata notes that Suga really heaps on the praise when someone scores (in this case, it’s Tsukishima). Ennoshita provides a bit of explanation for it, and then says that Kageyama’s making a “why do I have to suck up to the others (mainly Tsukishima), you idiot ” sort of face XD (Kageyama: “I didn’t say that! And something like that isn’t really…”).

Ennoshita’s really cute this chapter.
Ennoshita: Hinata’s technique is still… erm… well…
Hinata: Extremely clumsy.
Ennoshita: S-sorry. Yeah.

He says that Kageyama has to pay as much attention to everyone else’s playing preferences as he does to Hinata’s, and mentions how Kageyama was really insistent on getting Asahi’s opinion of his tosses during practice.

Ennoshita: I think our spikers are at a pretty high level.
Kageyama: >3> Well… I think… that… too…

The trio notice that the game is now tied at 2-2, and it’s Oikawa’s serve. Karasuno’s defense is DRASTICALLY different than before - it’s basically just Daichi and Noya taking up half the court, while Tanaka and Asahi stand off to either side and Suga and Tsukishima hang out near the net. Oikawa targets Daichi, and they both make this sneering face when his receive is successful. Karasuno scores off it, and Oikawa’s all “…as expected of captain-kun.”

The chapter ends with an indication that Hinata and Kageyama are both going to be back in the game soon.

Next chapter has center color and the results of the popularity poll.

More AC / 47 ronin stuff

Someone in the mangahelpers’ thread about AC wondered if Shindou would be punished as a result of the events in chapter 36, so I got curious and decided to see if there was anyone named “Shindou” in the story surrounding the 47 ronin. I ended up finding more than just that.

So, it’s already been established that Class E’s students are named for the 47 ronin themselves (Itona as well, though I’m not sure where Ritsu fits in). Asano is likely named for Asano Naganori, the lord of Ako Domain, who was forced to commit seppuku because he drew his sword (and attacked someone) in Edo Castle.

But here’s the interesting stuff I just found:

AC character: Shindou Kazutaka (baseball club captain)
In Ako Domain, there was a vassal named Shindou Toshimoto, who was the leader of 400 foot soldiers. After Asano’s death, he sided with Ooishi Yoshio and those who chose to defend Ako Castle and ended up in a confrontation with Oono Kurobei (the chief retainer of the Ako Domain), who believed they should surrender to the Tokugawa shogunate.

AC character: Oono (Class 3-D teacher primarily responsible for Nagisa and Karma’s drop into 3-E)
As mentioned above, Oono Kurobei was a bureaucrat and the chief retainer of the Ako Domain. After Asano’s death, he insisted that the Domain’s remaining money be distributed based on people’s annual earnings (whereas Ooishi favored those with lower incomes).

AC character: Terai Kiyoshi (baseball club advisor)
In Ako Domain, there was a vassal named Terai Genkei who also sided with Ooishi after Asano’s death. After the surrender of Ako Castle, he moved to Kyoto.

AC character: Tsuchiya Kaho (Maehara’s 2-faced ex-girlfriend)
There was a samurai named Tsuchiya Michinao who was a direct vassal of the shogunate. He was the son of Kururi Domain’s head and took part in the battle at Ako Castle.

AC character: Seo (Kaho’s boyfriend)
One of Ooishi’s retainers was named Seo Magozaemon.

I do intend to, actually. I think I’ve had a partial chapter 7 translation sitting around for a while now, but I keep getting caught up in the currently ongoing series I translate (Haru Polish finished with a grand total of like… 19 chapters, I think?)

In all honesty, though, I wouldn’t particularly mind at all if the group I was working with had someone else translate it, since I’m insanely slow. “orz

Man, going from translating Haikyuu to Ansatsu to Saiki in one evening is really bizarre. Especially when all three are sports-themed chapters. It’s like… “happy volleyball funtime!!” to “manipulative baseball crazytime” to “dodgeball for dummies”. And then Shiinake no Hitobito completely breaks the chain and it becomes “weird ninja antics”.

(I’d summarize the other series I translate, but I think that list would end up kinda long “orz)

Thanks to some digging around on tech support forums, I found a way around the whole “Epson not making Windows 7-compatible drivers for their scanners” thing. Which means I can now scan stuff! And, as promised, here are the extra pages from the tankobon version of chapter 40 (as well as the preliminary note that explains why they weren’t in the original magazine version).

What made me laugh the most was the sketch of Tobioni and the Kanabouyou. Just… PFFFT. So perfect. Tomorrow, I’ll see if I can post up pictures of the extra pages in chapter 40, even if it just ends up being with my cellphone.

Mostly just so people know I’m working on it (but geez, it’s like 37 pages with small print and no furigana. Cut me some slack!) The next installment is in April, so hopefully I’ll be able to finish the prologue by then (not to mention translating chapters of Haikyuu and Assassination Classroom every week)… “OTL

Having heard their exchange, their mother lifted the curtain at the entryway and poked her head in.

“He’ll be staying over there for the duration of the holidays, starting this evening.”

Though the girl had been only half-awake before, with those words, her eyes snapped open.

“Ehh?! I wanna go too!”

“Come to think of it, Shouyou, you have classes today like usual, don’t you? Did you make sure to put your study materials in there?” While posing her question, Hinata’s mother pulled the girl away from Hinata’s back, to which she’d been clinging. Though the bloated bag certainly looked somewhat stretchy, there didn’t seem to be a day’s worth of textbooks and notebooks inside.

“I leave them all at school, so there’s no problem!”

With that cheerful answer, Hinata, ignoring his mother’s narrowed eyes, flung open the front door.

“Okay, I’m off!”

And it just gets more amusing as it goes. I really wish I could find a text transcription online somewhere, because that would make translating go MUCH faster than me squinting to figure out kanji…

I’ve only skimmed the raw (haven’t started translating yet), but it made me giddy and thus I had to share some spoilers.

Also, Issue #17 (chapter 54) will have center color.

In chapter 53, Kageyama’s playing gets progressively worse, and everyone can see it (at one point, Yamaguchi says “Kageyama kinda doesn’t seem like his usual self…”). Aobajousai’s coach notes that Karasuno’s attacks seem to be slowing down, and Oikawa thinks about how a setter is supposed to bring out each spiker’s full power, which Kageyama isn’t doing. And… ultimately, Kageyama is switched out for Suga.

Suga squeezes Kageyama’s shoulder as they’re passing each other to switch.
Suga: Don’t get depressed. This is just to change the rhythm a bit.
Kageyama: Sorry.

On the sidelines, Hinata starts shouting at Kageyama.
Hinata: I already said that I’m definitely gonna be the one to defeat you!!! Until then, you’re not allowed to lose to anybody else!!!
Kageyama: …The match isn’t over yet, so I haven’t lost, either.

Yamaguchi dragging Hinata away by the armpits is amusing. XD
Ukai tells Kageyama to watch from the sidelines and pay careful attention to Suga’s plays.
