I am determined to finish this tomorrow (today I ended up a bit busier than I’d anticipated), but here’s a preview of why Yoshihira (Seimei’s son) had me going “T^T awww…” while reading:

(under a cut in case people want to wait for the entire translation/full scanlation)

Evidently it’s ochimizu’s birthday, so I dug around in my translations folder to see if I had anything I could post for the occasion. And thus! Here’s a rather large chunk of Hakuouki Yuugiroku’s opening scene. No spoilers at all for the main game(s), since Yuugiroku is completely devoid of plot, usual caveat about my translation abilities, etc.

This edition of LFTM comes from a chapter of Haikyuu!!, and can also be written 柄じゃない. I actually found an English site that makes mention of the phrase, but a) my context didn’t fit what they were saying and b) the Q&A on a Japanese site about the meaning made much more sense. So! Without further ado…

Question: What does ガラじゃない (gara jyanai) mean?

Answer:

It means “not that type (of person)” or “a different sort of character”. 柄にもなく (gara ni mo naku, “out of character”) is a phrase with the same meaning.

Nishinoya: I came to Karasuno because… I liked the girls’ uniform. A LOT! Of course, the girls themselves went beyond my expectations! And! Besides that! The boys wear gakuran!! Black ones!! Black gakuran are cool, ain’t they! We had blazers in junior high~ I seriously wanted a gakuran so bad~! Not brown or gray or any of those, but black!
Tanaka: I know, right!
Nishinoya: Yeah! Karasuno has black gakuran, the girls’ uniform is cute, and it’s close to my house, so the decision was a no-brainer!

(Haikyuu!!, chapter 17)

The character up there who most people won’t recognize is Nishinoya. He’s introduced in chapter 16 (the translation for it should be up soon! I just have a couple more lines to puzzle out) and is a libero for Karasuno. He’s also really really hilarious.
(hopefully this time the image will be the right size…)

Just something a bit interesting… this is from Nurarihyon no Mago chapter 205. The top is my translation (image from Mangatopia’s release), and the bottom is Viz’s, aka the official translation (image from Shonen Jump Alpha’s website).
(…mine’s kinda… a lot better. HEY VIZ COME HIRE ME.)
